Sea Nettles

We have been getting many sea nettles in our Fyke nets recently. Sea nettle stings feel like an acidic burn, if you have ever been stung by the plant nettle then you know what I mean.

I believe it is four years old. Cannot tell gender yet. You distinguish between a male and female by the tails. Females have thin tails and males have fat. Male tails are fat because that is where they store their reproductive organs. A turtles gender is determined by the temperature of the nest. Hotter nests are females.

When the turtles hatch they will be gathered up, marked and released. Sadly, I will not be there for this part. This is one of the fences we made to keep the hatchlings in and the predators out. Fancy looking, huh :)

And that pretty blue water you are seeing ... well lets just say you wouldn't want to swim in it. When the island gets done it should be very beautiful and natural looking, but until then ...

A bird called a cormorant got stuck in one of our nets. Luckly it did not drowned, but was just stunned. We set in on a beach to let it rest.

Fyke nets

Fyke nets are long nets with two wings. The turtles swim into the nets and dive down trying to past. They then follow the nets and go into a series of netted hoops that they can't escape from. The tops of the hoops are out of the water so the turtles can breath.
